Love is complicated. While there are some who are willing to overcome all the hurdles in their way, there are some who do not find a happily ever after for themselves. But there are also some who fight against all odds and leave behind everything to be with the one they love. Such is the story of Ms Angeline Francis Khoo, daughter of one of the richest men in Malaysia, Khoo Kay Peng.
Ms Angeline Francis Khoo. A 34-year-old daughter of Malaysian tycoon has decided to marry the man of her choice going against her father and leaving behind her father's million dollar inheritance.
"I believed dad's stance was wrong, so there was no question about what was right," said Ms Khoo in an interview.
She even revealed that she currently isn't in talking terms with her father who is a 78-year-old businessman and the owner of Malayan United Industries. The company has substantial stakes in lifestyle brand Laura Ashley UK and the Corus group of luxury hotels.
"I've been fortunate to have that perspective: you can have money and it's a blessing; it allows you to do things and gives you options, but there are also things that come with it, such as control. Money amplifies negative characteristics and that can cause problems. To walk away from that was actually very easy. I didn't even consider it," said Ms Khoo.
Ms Khoo is the fourth child of Mr Khoo and his ex-wife and former Malaysian beauty queen Pauline Chai.
She met the love of her life, Jedidiah Francis, a Carribean born data scientist during her course at Oxford University in 2008.
The couple wed in the Pembroke College Chapel where Mr Francis worked with only about 30 guests. However, there was nobody from Ms Khoo's side to bless the newlywed couple.
Angeline often spent her university holidays working at different departments of Laura Ashley since she was supposed to join her father's business soon. She is also a fashion designer and claimed to know nothing about her father's million dollar property until her parents chose to get a divorce after being married for 43 years.
Ms Khoo was the only witness during her parents' divorce.
Forbes magazine ranked Mr Khoo at the 44th number on the list of Malaysia's 50 richest people with a net worth of US$300 million.
